home for christmas

It's weird coming home for the holidays. When I am around people I haven't seen in years, I behave the way I was back then. And so do they. I'm not sure why I do it. Maybe it's easier to just fall into old habits then take the risk that you might not like the new versions of each other? Or maybe it's just easier to not make the effort. I've grown and changed a lot in the past few years, but when I'm back in Halifax, it's hard not to act like the old me, and it's unnerving as fuck. So I come home less and less often. I like the new Joey more. I look better naked now, for instance. I don't know how that happened. Maybe nobody looks good naked until they leave their home town. Or anyway maybe it's hard to believe you look good naked until you get away. Maybe it gets easier to believe once you go somewhere new and you get to be who you are, instead of who you had to be in order to get by where you were.

I want to go somewhere where flowers always blow in the breeze and the raindrops are big sloshy things
The air would be ripe with the smell of fresh apples and raspberries
They'd hang heavy and red from their anchors
Fall right into my mouth when I look up

The wolves would wrap around me tight when I howled their calls
Mermaids would kiss me hard when I needed them most

There wouldn't be a hurtful word in the language
I'd be native and nobody would be foreign

Fish would tickle you all over as you drift down the river
Boats would be made from trees, their sails stitched from leaves, their anchors cast from stone

Hey guys, I was wondering if some of you could help me out. I'm putting together five poems to submit to the Allegheny Review and there's a cash prize involved. They don't have any examples of their work up on their website so it's hard for me to judge what to submit. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to look over the ~7 poems I have so far and tell me which five are the best? If so plz leave your emails. Thanks so very much :)

Seasons Greetings from all of us here A Softer World. We've had quite the year, haven't we? It's been a bit of a roller coaster. But there were peaks as well as valleys. For every unwanted pregnancy there was a fortuitous tumble down the stairs, and for every human trafficking police sting operation there was an incompetent handling of the evidence! Another year has come and gone, and neither of us have ruined our lives yet. We hope you're full of high proof cheer

so maybe the key is just to do what you're supposed to do, and stop trying to fight it so hard. they say that this is a waste of life and all, but i don't mean it that way. i just mean that if choose to be a bum, at least be an effective bum.
don't decide to be a good person and enroll in college and then be a shitty person and miss your classes because you're high. really, the whole concept isn't that hard.
find one thing and stick with it. but what do you do when you don't ever finish anything? i am too indecisive and easily distracted to make commitments like that. but maybe i am seeing things the wrong way.
i'm sick of calling you once in awhile to see if you want to hangout and then when you blow me off being secretly annoyed even though i seem fine and then it builds up and i explode.

though, in the midst of destruction is nothing but creation. so, self, stay strong. you are self, you are you, you are only here to kill time. there has to be something more. one day i'll be a star in the sky, a leaf on a tree, or maybe a fox in it's burrow.

It is the time of year when I get very excited about upcoming movies. Sherlock Holmes is the top of my list, because a) I really enjoyed Snatch by Guy Ritchie, and b) I am queer as a glass doorknob for that delightful Robert Downey Jr.

Also, I am actually a bit excited about seeing Avatar, which was not the case after I first saw the trailers. But the more I hear about it, the more interested I get. It's not first on the list, but it's on there. Has anyone seen it? What did you think?

(Also, A Single Man is so good, and you should see it if you can.)

So I just removed a fuck ton of people from my friend's list. It was mostly inactive journals or journals of people I didn't know. If you want to be readded or think I deleted you by accident, just let me know and I'll readd you. I promise it's nothing personal.
